A natural rhythm in life is to plan an activity, work at it, and then celebrate the accomplishment, and finally rest. This understanding has shaped how we approach needs and challenges in the world around us.

The Canton Family community does not have traditional, on-going programs, or “ministries.” Instead, we approach needs on a project basis. As members of the community identify needs (whether they involve money, time, or both) these needs are shared with the community.

Although there is nothing wrong with “ministries,” we find several advantages to having a project-based approach to addressing needs around us. First, we believe that projects allow for the natural rhythm of planning, working, celebrating, and resting. We believe that it is important to celebrate accomplishments, and acknowledge rest as a natural and needed part of life. Second, doing things on a project basis is more natural with a smaller group whose size and resources can change quickly. Third, it demands focused goals with clear-cut endpoints. Finally, it allows for greater flexibility in following the Spirit and addressing the changing needs around us.

A project may be helping coordinate or obtain transportation for a family. It may be recurring small projects, such as lending through Kiva. Or may be “adopting” a house through Habitat for Humanity. We are developing a rhythm in our major projects:

Some projects are designed to celebrate accomplishments and prepare individuals, couples, and families for big changes in their future. This has resulted in our community developing a tradition of having a Blessing for special occasions. Whether it is a graduation, an engagement, a career move, or some other accomplishment, we join in celebrate with the individuals. But it is more than a celebration. It is an opportunity for the community to affirm its love of the people and its commitment to them as they continue their journey in new and exciting ways.
